Message from the President regarding Program Director search
June 12, 2008
Dear WMSC Member,
As I reported to you in my letter on March 17, 2008, the board initiated a search for the newly created role of Program Director. In that letter I outlined to you, while the job title remained the same, the scope of the job has changed. This all came about from a report by an independent consultant the board hired to review the organizational structure of our club. The new role of Program Director will report directly to the President and have overall responsibility for the day to day operations of our club.
After an extensive three month search, the Board of the WMSC is pleased to announce that we have engaged a new Program Director for our club. Anyone that has been around alpine skiing will know the name Currie Chapman. Currie has a vast list of accomplishments as an athlete coach, program director for ACA, and business manager. He has participated in six Olympic Games and in 2005 was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
Currie was the Head Coach responsible for the Canadian Women’s Alpine Ski Program from 1978 to 1988, leading the team to international prominence with 11 World Cup victories, 2 World Championship medals and an Olympic medal. As an athlete Currie was a member of the Canadian Men’s Ski Team for 5 years. In 1986 Currie was named Coach of the Year by the Canadian Government and in 1988 Currie wrote a book reflecting on his coaching philosophy and the motivation of elite athletes as they strive to become the best in the world.
More recently Currie has been a representative for the FIS, a FIS TD and technical advisor; as well he sits on a number of boards and committees within sport. Currie also has a strong background in media, marketing and business. He brings a wealth of experience in alpine skiing, strong management skills, and proven leadership to our club. Currie is married (Dale Ryan) with two children (Jordy Chapman & Christie Chapman) and plans to move to Whistler from Sidney B.C. Please take the time to introduce yourself and welcome Currie and his family to our family. You may meet him around the club this month but he will not be starting full time until August 1st.
On a personal note, I would like to join Directors and members in thanking Nigel Cooper for his passion and commitment at the WMSC over the past seven years. On behalf of the board and all members, I would like to wish him well in his new endeavor and look forward to seeing him on the hill as a member of the WMSC family.
Yours truly,
Jim McGovern
President WMSC
