Torch Relay Madness
Speckles of white lights lit the skier’s plaza in Whistler Friday night as the Olympic Flame dazzled the thousands of people who surrounded the stage to catch a glimpse of the action.
Highlights included torchbearer Julia Murray, who carried the flame on a snowmobile near the Gondola Transit Exchange. Murray, an aspiring athlete and daughter of the late Dave Murray — one of the Crazy Canucks, passed the flame on to Steve Podborski. Podborski, a former Crazy Canuck, had crowds in a frenzy as he skied the flame into the celebration site before handing off to community cauldron lighter Tyler Allison.
Seventeen year old Allison (Member of the WMSC Ski X team), a London 2010 Olympic hopeful in mountain biking, was selected by the community for his athletic ability as well as for being a positive role model.
"Carrying the torch was amazing. It made me feel like I was representing Canada and that it was the first step of fulfilling my dream of going to the Olympics." Stefi
Other Whistler Mountain Ski Club athletes who were lucky enough to be home when some last minute torchbearers were required were: Toria Whitney – Canadian Alpine Development Team Member, Alex Gershon, Stefanie Fleckenstein, Max Peiffer and Cameron Alexander.
Congratulations to all including Whistler Blackcomb’s Cate Webster!
