The U14’s had an outstanding weekend in Fernie for BC Provincials March 22-25. It was a long trek to get there but the team got the most out of the four day trip – three days of racing including GS, Slalom and a dual paneled slalom team event to cap it off. Fernie delivered all kinds of weather but most importantly some sunshine and light pow that the kids (and parents and coaches!) enjoyed in between races. The event was seamless from beginning to end thanks to a great organizing crew.
A big shout out to the parents who chaperoned – Joanne Graham, Jason Shea and Graham Ross – as well as the fantastic coaches including Henry, Sarah, Lucas, John and Rob (also chief bus driver!).
On the first day the men skied GS under sunny skies, and despite a course that seemed to produce a few too many DNF’s WMSC had a good showing and five top ten finishers: Duncan Ross 2nd, Felix Shorter 3rd, Rowland Legg 5th, Sascha Gilbert 6th and Sam Fuller 10th
For the ladies slalom Sara Stiel took gold, Kaila Lafreniere 3rd, Alexa Brownlie 5th and Erin Husken 6th.
On day two it snowed which made for some challenging conditions later in the race but once again the kids performed well and several racers had repeat top 10 performances.
For the men’s slalom Shorter finished with bronze and Ross 10th, and for the ladies GS Lafreniere won gold followed by Husken 5th, Brownlie 6th and Meagan Doiron 9th.
For the combined overall event both the men and women had four top ten finishers each. On the men’s side Shorter was 3rd, Ross 4th, Gilbert 9th and Fuller 10th and for the women it was Lafreniere 2nd, Brownlie & Husken tied for 3rd and Stiel 7th.
The final day of racing was a paneled slalom dual team event. The Coastal zone dominated and took home the “stone” trophy for the most points overall. The kids donned plaid shirts in memory of Nick Zoricic and had fun cheering their teammates and racing in a more relaxed team event. It was a spectacular sunny day with fresh powder to finish the weekend.
Well done U14s!
